Our Story

Mei Lai Wah is synonymous with Chinatown, an embodiment of the American Dream.

Our story begins with our grandfather, who immigrated to the United States from Toisan, bringing with him traditional techniques and a deep respect for the craft of baking. In 1968, those values took shape behind our doors on Bayard Street, where we began serving the community and building a lasting presence in New York City.

For nearly sixty years, Mei Lai Wah has been a familiar and comforting haven for the Chinese community, reintroducing the flavors of Guangzhou and Toisan to generation after generation. The recipes stayed true. The standards stayed high.

As the neighborhood evolved, so did we. What began at 62 Bayard Street eventually found a new home at 41 Mott Street, allowing us to continue serving our community while staying true to who we are.

Today, Mei Lai Wah remains generationally owned and guided by the same principles it was founded on. We continue to bake with care, patience, and respect for the work that came before us.

A tradition passed down. Still rising daily. Since 1968.
